Arguably the best place to stay in Wolfville. Great location on a quiet street on the North side of the Annapolis River Basin.
There was a warm, friendly greeting and a tour of this Victorian mansion.
The woodwork and fine furnishings within this nicely restored 1893 heritage property were breathtaking.
Our room was in the Carriage house (separate building) and was so small we were tripping over our luggage at every turn. Finally a B&B in Nova Scotia with an air conditioner that actually kept the room comfortable for sleeping. The beds were on the hard side and there were no extra pillows.
There was a full breakfast including choice of both food and drink.
Rated as a 5 star by Canada select, Victoria’s Historic Inn gets a 4 star rating from us and the best value of all the B&B’s we stayed at in Nova Scotia.
Arguably the best place to stay in Annapolis Royal. Great location across the street from the river with no obstructions to block the view.
We were greeted at the door by a friendly but busy host (Susan) and offered a nice glass of wine.
The 238 year old heritage property was tastefully modernized. Due to the age of the property there were some inherent problems such as sloping floors which resulted in door locks that did not work and trips to the washroom in the middle of the night feel like a drunken stroll.
There was no telephone or TV in the room. There was a large common sitting and reading area on the main floor.
The fruit cup and homemade muffins were a very tasty, especially with the nice selection of homemade jams.
The main course was quiche with home grown herbs. If you are a real man you do not eat quiche so this may be disappointing.
Rated as a 5 star by Canada Select, the Bailey House B&B gets a 3 1/2 star by us.
Arguably the best place to stay in Shelburne. Located across the street from Shelburne Harbor, the view was obstructed by a factory where oak barrels are manufactured.
There was a cool reception with a quick tour that ended up at our room.
No air conditioning made sleep difficult. The complimentary wine in our room was free for a reason. There was a nice fenced in outdoor sitting area with chairs, tables and a fountain but there was no indoor common sitting area. The bedroom was both bright with no blinds on the windows and very noisy with traffic on a busy street with the windows open due to no A/C. The pillows were LARGE and HARD.This was the only B&B we encountered on our Nova Scotia trip that had an in-room coffee maker.
The fresh “pressed” coffee first thing in the morning was fabulous. We loved being able to pick our breakfast from a menu. There was several hot dishes to choose from and even a cereal section.
Rated 4 1/2 stars by Canada Select we rated it a 3.
Don’t forget to have dinner at Charlotte’s Lane……VERY delicious.
Arguably the besat place to stay in Lunenburg. Located within a block from Lunenburg Harbor, with a great view of both the harbor and the golf course.
Friendly Greeting at the front desk.
Nice clean room with a GREAT VIEW of the harbor. The air conditioner was the window type and even at the coldest setting the room was uncomfortably warm. You had to go to the bar in the restaurant to get ice for a drink in your room. The room was very quiet. The fridge on its coldest setting did not keep things cold.
The bed was very comfortable but the pillows were LARGE and HARD. After hauling “Lyle’s Blend” coffee all the way across the country, we appreciated our first in-room coffee maker.
Rated 4 1/2 stars by Canada Select we rated it a 3 1/2.

The B&B was in a good location and close to downtown. We were greeted at the entrance by a very friendly host (Mike) and shown the property. Mike then helped us with getting our bags to our room (Portico Room).
No air conditioning made sleep difficult. The 1915 Heritage property had a distinctive musty smell. The bed was very squeaky……you figure out what that means to you.
The morning coffee and orange juice was excellent! The fruit cup was a tasty start to the meal as was the Croissant. The main course itself was scrambled eggs which were on the runny side and had very little taste. They were a major disappointment for those of us who prefer our eggs over easy.
At $190 a night we’d have been much better off at the Marriot.
Rated as a 4 1/2 star by Canada select, the Pepperberry Inn gets a rating of 3 star by us.

Looking for a reliable Oriental / Asian chain restaurant with great tasting food that you can count on every time? Our opinion would be for you to keep on looking.
We had our meal delivered. It arrived within the hour as promised.
Here is what we ordered for 4 people:
Vietnamese Spring Rolls – too meaty and too spicy – one bite was enough for me.
Imperial Spring Rolls – not bad – no plum sauce included – they did provide some kind of watery sauce that we found ran all over the plate and made everything soggy.
Lemon Chicken – the chicken was dry and tough and not near enough lemon sauce was included.
Crispy Ginger Beef – the meat was tough, chewy and not at all crispy. Overall the dish had very little flavor – kinda tasted like the Dry Garlic Ribs.
Dry Garlic Ribs – the ribs were soggy instead of dry and where was the garlic? – tasted more like the Ginger Beef.
Deep Fried Prawns – to much batter and grease for our liking – nice big tasty prawns once you get past the batter.
Cantonese Chow Mien – was ok but was heavy on the noodles and skimpy on meat and vegetables.
Cantonese Fried Rice – very plain and had frozen mixed vegetables including corn and yellow beans – we found that a little odd.
They did not include any plain white rice like most places do.
There were no napkins, no fake cutlery and only 3 soy sauce packages for 8 dishes – and where the hell were the fortune cookies? Must be the recession.
As far as the Lee Wok (also known as Lee Gardens Wok and Chopstick) at 8404 182 St. Edmonton, AB Canada, we rate them a generous 2 star. It was edible, filled the gap and our young guests were less critical of the dishes than we were.
Our most favorite Oriental / Asian restaurant can be found in the little town of Coalhurst Alberta, Canada called Coyotes. Their dishes are almost as good as my wife’s!

In the mood for one of what we used to believe were the best burgers around we stopped at the White Spot restaurant at 10400 Macleod Trail South in Calgary, Alberta. The service was slow despite the restaurant being half empty at 2:00 in the afternoon. We waited a good 10 minutes before our server Christina arrived.
We wanted a glass of red wine with our dinner so we tried two different selections. We had a glass of the Jackson Triggs Merlot (Proprietors Select) and a glass of the Peller Estates Merlot (their feature wine). Both were a “big” disappointment!
Valerie had the traditional burger while I had the Monty Mushroom burger. We both had the fries with a side of gravy. The burgers were pretty good with a couple of exceptions……..the one piece of tomato on my burger was a little sliver of a piece from the end of the tomato and it was obviously old as it was soft and wrinkled and the buns were not as fresh as they might have been. The rest of the burger was tasty with the meat cooked just right (not overdone!). If you like thick cut fries, you’ll like these…..we prefer thin cut our selves. The gravy could definitely use some help as it was pale and not very flavorful.
Our server was not very attentive and when she did stop by once to see how things were, we asked for extra napkins which never did show up. When we asked if we were to pay her or at the front she said we could do either but we might be better to pay at the front as she sometimes takes a long time to find the card machine. Having already waited long enough throughout our visit, we paid at the front.
The restaurant was clean as were the washrooms. The garbage cans in both washrooms were overflowing.
Having had a similarly disappointing experience with breakfast at the Edmonton, Alberta White Spot just a month earlier, we have decided to take White spot off of our list of restaurants. Too bad….we used to love their burgers. Having said that, it was the Kelowna White Spot where we have had great burgers in the past.
We rate our experience at the White Spot restaurant in Calgary Alberta as a 2 star and certainly not worth the $40. We could have had just as good experience at MacDonald s or A&W for half the price and half the time. Sorry White Spot….you are no longer in our books as the best burgers around….what happened???
Located on the south end of Edmonton with very easy access from all directions.
We wanted to have a nice breakfast before our 5 hour drive home. We love the White Spot for burgers and fries so we thought we would try them for breakfast.
Their coffee was a bit too strong (and we like strong coffee) and a little bitter.
There was only one server that we could see. She could have used help as the service was a little slow.
I had their Big Bowl (kind of like a scrambler). The only piece of meat in the dish was one strip of partially cooked bacon. The eggs were good as were the vegetables, cheese and mushrooms. The hash browns were ok.
My wife had the traditional bacon and eggs. Her bacon was also undercooked. The eggs were tasty and cooked just right.
We were happy to be able to have multi-grain toast.
The place could definitely use a cleaning crew. From the benches to the bathrooms.
We rate the breakfast meals that we had at the White Spot in Edmonton, Alberta as a 2 star. Stick to burgers White Spot and hire some more staff for cleaning and serving.
Our first experience at Ruth’s Chris Steak House was to celebrate the announcement of my son expecting his first child and my wife’s son becoming engaged.
We received a nice friendly greeting on arrival and quick seating. Very nice ambiance. White tablecloths. beautiful unique fireplace on one wall. Great service from start to finish.
Excellent selection of wines (a little on the pricey side). À la carte menu (also a little on the pricey side).
We started with the Calamari which was not very good at all. It was drenched with some kind of sauce which made the battered coating very soggy rather than crispy and calamari itself was very rubbery. I know….it’s squid and it’s supposed to be rubbery…but this was VERY rubbery. Between 6 of us we ate only about 1/2 of the dish. I complained and they did not charge us which was decent of them.
The entree’s were brought to the table on plates that had been heated to 500° F. Seemed a little excessive and more than a little dangerous. Like most people, I usually touch my plate at some point in time while dining.
Their claim to fame is serving USDA corn fed beef. They do have Alberta beef on the menu, but most of the choices are US cuts.
My wife’s son and I had the USDA Rib-Eyes. What should have been a very tender piece of meat was more than a little tough. It was tasty and medium rare as requested. One of our future daughter in laws had the chicken and the other the Portabello Mushrooms. They both were happy with their selection. My wife had the Alberta Tenderloin. It came topped with butter which history has taught us is not a good sign. It was medium rare as requested but also on the tough side for tenderloin. My son had the tenderloin and scallops. He thought the scallops were better than the steak.
The side of Broccoli was overcooked and had a burnt or grilled taste. The potatoes Au Gratin were ok but nothing special. The snow peas with garlic was our best side order pick.
All that said, it would look like our group of 6 unanimously agree that for a Steak House, they could use some improvement.
Dinner for 6 (including 2 bottles of wine) was just under $500.
We rate Ruth’s Chris Steak House (Edmonton, Alberta) as a 3, thanks to the ambiance and the excellent service. Not worth the $$$$ price tag. Outback’s would have been a much better choice.
The Derby Steakhouse is located in downtown Butte, Montana. It is actually inside the Casino. According to the locals, this is the best steak in Butte.
The atmosphere is a little rustic, open and loud! There is no dividers or sound barriers between the casino and the restaurant or between tables. Between the smell and noise, there was no mistaking that you were in a Casino / Bar.
The steaks were Excellent! The rest of the meal was average. The wince selection was mediocre.
The service was pretty good. There was lots of parking.
We rate the The Derby Steakhouse in Butte, Montana as a 3 star restaurant. Was it the best steak in Butte? Probably….there is not much else to choose from. We would eat there again.
